Medical Advocacy

If you or someone you care about has been recently sexually assaulted it may be a good idea to consider having a medical exam.

Iowa law gives all victims/survivors the right to have an advocate present throughout the medical process.

An advocate can be with the victim/survivor through every step of the medical process. An advocate can explain the medical exam process, will offer support and help make sure the victim/survivor, friends and/or family get their questions answered.

The advocate’s role is to:

  • Remain with the victim/survivor (if he/she wishes) throughout the examination, explaining all medical procedures and tests.
  • Explain options and choices concerning police reporting and legal rights.
  • Talk about the emotions and trauma that typically follow rape.
  • Assist family members process the incident.
  • Schedule follow-up counseling and support.
